Training Courses

Two Developer Training courses were offered at BlackBerry DevCon Americas on Monday, October 17 to help attendees learn about how to develop for the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ Tablet OS. There are two training courses available that cover development with Adobe® Flex & Adobe® AIR® and BlackBerry® WebWorks™.

Develop for the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Using BlackBerry WebWorks

Course Description

This one-day course is designed for experienced HTML5, JavaScript®, and CSS developers who wish to leverage their existing skills to create applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. You will gain hands-on experience in developing for the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS by creating your own code and implementing various features of a sample application.

You are encouraged to go beyond the course exercises and explore the framework as much as possible. Any remaining time at the end of the day will be dedicated to answering deeper questions regarding the BlackBerry WebWorks framework and best practices, and allowing you additional experimentation time with the platform and tools.

Each unit in the course will consist of the instructor introducing a topic, followed by hands-on walkthroughs in which you will create, compile, package and deploy code on your own system. Where appropriate, you will be prompted to experiment beyond the formal walkthrough and to raise any additional questions you may have.

Objectives:

By the end of this training you should be able to:

  • Describe the current technical landscape as it relates to mobile and tablet development.
  • Set up your development environment to create BlackBerry PlayBook tablet applications.
  • Create, compile, package and deploy a BlackBerry WebWorks based application for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
  • Debug an application using the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Simulator.
  • Express architectural issues and options related to tablet development.
  • Employ multiple techniques for integrating BlackBerry PlayBook tablet applications with external services.
  • Use an offline database within an application.
  • Identify basic user interface considerations when creating applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
